DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The second box is organized around a large circle that contains a representation of the Sienese she-wolf suckling the twins Breast and Aschio, surrounded by totemic animals of a number of allied cities, the horse of Arezzo, Florence marzocco the lion, the panther Lucca, Pisa hare, the unicorn of Viterbo, the stork in Perugia, the elephant in Rome and Orvieto's goose. It is very ancient symbols, often obsolete, and probably chosen to represent a diverse set: Rome as you do not choose the Lupa Capitolina, too similar to the emblem of Siena, which is "son." In the four corners there are other rounds with the lion lily of Massa Marittima, Volterra's eagle, the dragon of Pistoia and the griffin of Grosseto. Apart from Rome, the chosen cities are part of the territory of Tuscia ideally, including the cities of Umbria and Alto Lazio today. This box is the only mosaic remained, there remain very worn originals in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo. It is traced back to 1373, consistent with the written representation of the Gothic. By an unknown author, was rebuilt in 1864-1865 by Leopoldo Maccari.
