DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
It is located in front of the portal of the left aisle, and being of African descent is represented with dark skin: the face, neck, hands and feet of black marble produce a noticeable effect. The head is veiled and crowned with a garland of flowers. He unrolled a scroll in his left hand, and holding in his right hand shows an open book. It reads: colaphos accipens tacebit dabit in verbera innocens dorsum ("Taking slaps will be silent. Shots will offer to back the innocent"). To his left is a plate supported by entwined serpents, which is engraved the following inscription: In manus iniquas veniet. dabunt deo alapas Manibus in cestis. miserabilis et ignominiosus. miserabilibus spem praebebit ("It will be in the hands unjust. give lashes with unclean hands to God miserable and ignominious instill hope to the miserable"). The two inscriptions allude to the scourging of Jesus The design is attributed to Guidoccio Cozzarelli based on a mention in the Chronicle of Siena Tom, with dating to 1483.
