Before 1844, there were two “fraternities” locally, one of the SS. Sacramento and the other of the Santo Chiodo.
The purpose of the first was to assist the poor and the sick; the second provided for the suffrage of the deceased.
To avoid recurring disputes, on August 21 of that year their unification was imposed.
After the merger, the small chapel continued to welcome the deceased awaiting their burial, a function historically linked to the adjacent cemetery area, which remained active until the Napoleonic edicts on cemeteries.
The temporary hospitality of the deceased in this chapel was linked to the impossibility of many families to be able to expose the body of their relative inside their own home. Until the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century, the family homes of many families were so narrow that they did not guarantee the ritual and customary visit to the deceased before burial.
In this case and in the case of the body returning from the hospital where it had been treated, a "Chamber of Rest" was set up in this chapel, using coffin support structures typical of our lands. These were the well-known "cataletti", connected to each other by two sturdy wooden planks, on which the coffin without a lid was placed, for the last display of the deceased.
Then, before the burial, the coffin was closed and carried on shoulders to the nearby church of Sant'Agata; here it received the funeral and was subsequently accompanied to the cemetery by a funeral procession, which crossed the town on foot for the last farewell from the fellow citizens.
